Title: Death of a Revolution: Writings and Poetry in the Sandinista Revolution
Major: History
Advisor: Katie Holt
Over decades of invasion and occupation, the Nicaraguan people developed a profound and robust literary and poetic tradition. From the days of resisting multiple American invasions to the struggle against the Somoza dictatorship and the revolution鈥檚 victory, poetry has been a significant part of Nicaraguan cultural memory. In studying this history, I work to better understand these crucial events and stories of Nicaragua鈥檚 history as a people. This paper seeks to highlight written word among the revolutionary movement, from everyday citizens to its leaders, the women who spurred on the feminist movements, and the religious movements in Nicaragua that would be imputed with the fight for liberation. It is a homage to the struggles of Nicaraguans and the art that would coincide with it. The Sandinista Revolution is often glossed over in history. I want to bring this movement to the forefront of people鈥檚 view of Nicaraguan history. The Iran-Contra affair overshadows western perspectives of the country. I hope to change that.
